The AMFA-Alaska Negotiating Committee (the “Committee”) is providing this update to the Membership at Alaska Airlines (AS). This is the only official authorized source of negotiating communications by the Committee.

The Committee began its roadshow this week to discuss the Agreement in Principle (AIP) reached between the parties earlier this month. The parties agreed AMFA Legal would create the first draft of a cover-to-cover TA. This was a time-consuming process as each individually TA’d article and the AIP in general had to be integrated into a full collective bargaining agreement (CBA) in a manner whereby you, the members, would be able to review all changes throughout the document. In addition, our contract was long overdue for formatting and language cleanup. We are happy to report AMFA Legal has completed this process, and last week a full draft of a complete TA was sent to the Company for review. Once the Company has completed its review and the parties align on the full TA, it will be sent to you for your consideration.

Your Committee is also working with Legal and our Economist to prepare a TA summary document to identify all the substantive changes within the full TA. The summary document, along with the full TA, will assist you in your review of this TA and allow you to make an informed decision on whether the TA satisfies your interests. We anticipate this summary document will be ready for your review this week.

Once the summary document and complete TA are finalized and available for your review, you will have a full picture of the economic and non-economic terms contained within the TA. As always, it is important to digest all the information to arrive at your decision. Your ALRs and Region Director will continue with the roadshows to further explain the contents of the TA and answer any questions you may have. This is the beginning of the democratic process.

Your Committee, through the process of collective bargaining, decided it was time for the members to be presented with, consider, and vote upon this TA. The decision on this TA is yours and yours alone. The Committee will not advise or recommend you vote one way or another. Rather, we will provide you with all the information needed and answer any questions you may have to allow each member to arrive at their own decision. The Committee works for you, and in the event this TA does not ratify, we will return to the table with your voice, to convey your interests and continue to bargain passionately on your behalf.

There will naturally be multiple opinions on the TA as the ratification process continues and emotions run high. It is important to share your opinions as points of discussion with each other, both during and outside of the roadshow. This is democracy in action. Your ALRs, Region Director, and Union Officers respect each member’s opinion and will listen to all feedback presented. It is through this respectful discourse that we, as a Union, engage in this important democratic process to make the best collective decision on behalf of the hard-working members at Alaska Airlines. Our democracy and our solidarity are our greatest strengths.
